Analysis of Pop Video 3 - Madhouse

This song ‘Our House’ was sung by Madhouse.
This song uses many of the typical conventions that are used to make a successful music video. The song begins with a row of rooftops and a train in the background. This immediately addresses and gives the audience a hint of where it is being set. This shot particularly does not go into a straight cut, but the camera moves across to the front of the house where the shot finishes. Considering that the song is called ‘Our House’, the audience will have some idea of what the song will entail. Being a consumer of the song, this shot allows the audience to gather a lot of information.
Throughout this song a strong variety of camera shots and angles were used to address the audience and prevent viewer fatigue. A specific shot of the whole band in the front room is very effective. This shot allows the audience to see the whole band and them in action. Another interesting shot is of the main singer. This is a close up of the man’s face; however his face is angled in-between a saxophone. Having fun and interesting shots like this, prevents the viewer from getting bored and makes the video a whole lot more attention grabbing.
Moreover, the video has taken Mis-en-scene effectively into account. For example, the costumes used are all practically the same. Having been given this information and the name of the song ‘Our House’, the audience may begin to think and connote that they are either brothers or related. In addition, the video varies from a few locations and settings, however much of it is in the home. Having multiple locations, the video comes across a lot more interesting as a lot more is going on for the viewer.
