Analysis of Rock Video 1 - U2

This music video is from U2 and is called ‘With or without you’.
This video begins very mysteriously as the character stairs at the floor. Having been shown this person we automatically presume that he is the leading singer. Unlike the Coldplay music video, this shows a lot of the band and them playing their instruments. At first the music video looks very creepy as the man doesn’t particularly show any emotion. In addition, along with dark background and black costume this creates an unpleasant atmosphere.
There are a variety of camera angles and shots within this music video which help add to the dark atmosphere. There are many close up angles used which allow the audience to see his facial expressions. Throughout, just like the Coldplay song, the singer doesn’t show much expression in his face which makes the song seem reasonably sad. Multiple times a particular fade transition was used which makes the video very effective. For example, a particular time it showed a man playing an instrument, which then fades into the lead singer. This makes the video interesting as it prevents viewer fatigue and different things are being shown. Moving back to the close up shots, these are shown to be very effective as they show the emotions of the band members which also reflect the sound and lyrics of the song, which also makes it stimulating for the viewer.
Moreover, the music video is primarily in black and white with some colour. This would have been put like this for a purpose, and is very effective as it helps reflect to the mood of the song. The lighting in the video is not natural as it looks like it’s filmed in a dark room. The type of lighting used includes spotlights, this helps highlight important parts and people within the music video. For example, at one time there was a spotlight on the lead singer. This encourages the audience to focus specifically on that singer as he is the one with the most importance.
